“Whiskey, like a beautiful woman, demands appreciation. You gaze first, then it’s time to drink.” I was reminded of this quote by author Haruki Murakami as I gazed at the beautiful bottle of The Macallan’s TIME: SPACE Mastery. On a dramatically rainy night in Delhi, the limited-edition bottle celebrating the brand’s 200 Years Young legacy was unveiled for the first time, making many of us draw in our breath at the exquisite beauty of the bottle and later, the beautiful honey hue of the dram itself.
Their most prestigious expression yet, TIME: SPACE Mastery, was brought to life through rich storytelling and tactile engagement. The venue chosen for the reveal was in keeping with the ultra-luxe launch – the Upper HSE by Tivoli was bathed in a shade of cherry red that is synonymous with The Macallan’s history because of the surname of the founder, Alexander Reid, and the colour used on the distillery’s oldest vintages released in the 1980s.
The doorway to the grand launch led through a passageway fashioned to look like a tunnel – again in hues of red. Parting the curtains, I entered the cocktail and tasting lounge and the first thing that caught my eye was the stunning bottle of TIME: SPACE Mastery perched on a tabletop. Drawing appreciative glances from the select group of media persons and members of The Macallan community, the circular bottle – a poignant reflection of life’s enduring cycle and a testament to the timeless legacy of The Macallan – was one hell of a beauty! The fact that it is a limited edition with only 120 bottles available in the country makes it even more desirable.
What followed was a tasting session led by Madhu Rajigani, Brand Ambassador, The Macallan, India, but not before he drew the guests’ attention to the powerful visual symbols surrounding us in the circular room. There was a sculptural installation inspired by the hedgehog, a natural formation representing protection, resilience and the quiet strength of nature. The red, spiked motif drawn from Time: Space Mastery, The Macallan’s iconic packaging, echoed throughout the event design. Inspired by the protective forms found in nature, the packaging features 200 sculpted spikes that envelop the box, symbolising both the safeguarding of the precious whisky within and a tribute to The Macallan’s 200-year legacy. There were also elegant references to the peacock, long revered for its natural beauty, signifying The Macallan’s commitment to 100 per cent natural colour.
That done, we proceeded to pick up our glasses of whisky and took a few short sniffs, as suggested by Rajigani. On the nose, sweet notes of vanilla, Mejdool dates and baked figs played along, followed by tropical notes, reminiscent of dried mango and ripe papaya. The sweeter notes lingered on as we sniffed some more. And then, it was time for the taste test. ‘Slainté!’ Raising our glasses, we cheered as we brought the glasses to our lips for the first taste.
Now, I have to be honest. I am not a regular whisky drinker, but even I could decipher that this is one great expression. On the palate, the whisky tasted rich with sweet-spicy notes of vanilla, orange marmalade and cinnamon. Adding a few drops of water, I took another sip and was rewarded with the lingering taste of creamy vanilla and dark chocolate. Rajigani proceeded to tell us about how the whisky is crafted in 14 exceptional cask types, including European and American Oak sherry-seasoned casks, Bourbon barrels, and the finest refill casks, embodying two centuries of dedication to mastery and precision.
Speaking about how The Macallan views the Indian luxury landscape and the consumer’s passion for luxury beverages, Rajigani said, “India’s deep-rooted appreciation for heritage, craftsmanship, and premium experiences aligns seamlessly with The Macallan’s core ethos. In recent years, Indian consumers have shown a clear shift toward premiumisation within the spirits category. Recognising this evolution, The Macallan has introduced limited annual expressions and ultra-prestige offerings tailored for a more discerning audience. Within India’s luxury circles, The Macallan represents more than just a whisky; it is a symbol of taste, refinement, and a global sensibility.” He added that as the brand enters its third century, India is seen not merely as a growing market, but as a community of connoisseurs who value the artistry behind every drop. “The bicentennial celebration is not only a tribute to The Macallan’s storied past but also a nod to the passion of a new generation of whisky lovers in India,” he said.
The evening was yet to come to an end. Two long tables were set with flowers, candles and cutlery for a four-course dinner that was crafted to reflect the layered complexity of The Macallan’s expressions. A tangy seasonal mango and avocado salad with Asian chilli, sesame, and ginger dressing was the perfect starter, followed by a hearty chicken, goat cheese and caramelised onion ravioli. For the mains, I tucked into a juicy pan-seared chicken breast with fig and brandy jus. The dessert was an orange and almond cake with mascarpone frosting. Of course, the glasses were always full as we paired the courses with cocktails, including The Macallan Summer High Ball, The Macallan Sherry Sour, and The Macallan Old Fashioned and raised them as a salute to the official debut of this limited-edition single malt in India.
