Meet The Roti Robot That Decodes Generations Of Intuition And Redefines Indian Cooking

A decade of innovation transforms India’s most instinctive kitchen ritual into intelligent, one-touch automation.

Across India, the humble round roti anchors the rhythm of everyday meals. It appears on tables twice, sometimes three times a day, quietly holding together everything from sabzis and dals to leftovers reimagined for dinner. Yet anyone who has spent time in an Indian kitchen knows that making a good roti is far from simple. What looks like a modest three-ingredient recipe is in reality one of the most technical and intuitive processes in home cooking. The dough must be soft but not sticky; the rolling must be even but gentle; the tawa heat must be just right so the roti puffs without hardening.

For decades, women have been the custodians of this everyday skill. It was this invisible, repetitive labour that sparked the idea behind Rotimatic, a roti robot that was designed with a simple but ambitious goal: to fully automate roti making and make it as simple as loading the raw ingredients, pressing a button, and getting hot, soft rotis in a matter of minutes.

Engineers–inventors Pranoti Nagarkar and Rishi Israni noticed a contradiction unfolding in Indian households everywhere. While living in Singapore, they missed the warmth of home-cooked rotis and Indian cooking. Their desire to hold on to their own cooking traditions and use ingredients of their own choice had one hindrance in its path. It was time, which was a scarce resource for the two of them. This also holds true for so many working professionals in India and NRIs abroad, missing Indian cooking. Even as technology transformed the pace of modern living, one kitchen ritual stood frozen in time: the daily roti routine.

What began as a deeply personal attempt to modernise a fundamental Indian food tradition and give people the ability to still enjoy the joy of eating a freshly made, hot roti while being busy in their lives soon grew into a global robotics pursuit. After 8 years of engineering, testing and iteration, the answer emerged as Rotimatic, a beautifully designed kitchen robot that represents the natural evolution of home cooking. Built for busy, urban households where time is scarce and expectations are high, it replaces labour with intelligence and effort with ease.

The Robot Built On Engineered Intuition

Rotimatic is a serious robotics system with ~500 components working together as one machine-brain. Its breakthrough lies in its philosophy of intuition, engineered. Anyone who has ever made rotis knows that flour behaves differently depending on type, origin, storage conditions, humidity, and more. One formula doesn't work, which is where intuition steps in. Rotimatic recreates that instinct with sensors for fingers, vision for eyes, and feedback loops. It senses dough consistency, decides in real time how to adapt, corrects variations and performs with the reliability of millions of repetitions.

This is the first and only end-to-end roti automation system in the world, measuring, dispensing, kneading, portioning, flattening and roasting each roti without a second of manual interference. Its AI-driven kneading and pressing mimic human judgment. A precision heating system that reaches up to 250°C ensures every roti puffs evenly, while smart software aligns mechanics, heat, pressure and timing. After all, it has made 252 million rotis till date.

On the surface, it looks like a sleek countertop appliance with a minimalist touchscreen interface. But inside lies a decade of testing and real-world learning from homes across countries. Once warmed up for five to six minutes, Rotimatic NEXT produces a fresh roti every 58 to 100 seconds, maintaining a consistent output of soft, warm, home-style rotis at a stretch. It replaces an entire roster of traditional tools, the tawa, the rolling board, the kneader and the belan, but also the need for the intuition that typically takes years to master. For the user, the experience is simple: add flour, water and oil; tap a button; receive perfectly cooked rotis. No supervision. No mess. No skill required.

The New Rhythm Of Home Cooking

What engineered intuition ultimately delivers is freedom. It liberates the cook from one of the most time-consuming aspects of Indian cuisine. It enables anyone, regardless of experience, age or skill, to make fresh rotis on demand. It keeps kitchens cleaner, families on schedule, and gives you control over the ingredients you feel safe using without the fatigue of daily manual labour for one person.

In a world where every minute matters, a robot that can sense, adapt and cook like a seasoned home expert is more than convenience; it is a meaningful upgrade. Rotimatic is the new language of the Indian kitchen: intuitive, intelligent, effortless and always ready with fresh rotis at the touch of a button.
